Sometimes called β€œdecentralised Twitter”, Bluesky was granted no-strings-attached seed funding from Twitter, and set off to build a better (more decentralised) social media. They’ve built the Authenticated Transfer Protocol (β€œATProto”) to eventually power a decentralised (or at least federated) series of clients and other applications. Some users have already begun experimenting with consuming Atproto in other apps.

It starting experiencing high growth around 2023-April-01 or so.

Bluesky allows you to attach a domain name as your handle, which is a clever reuse of established distributed tech on top of (currently custodial) secret keys. I’m currently @expede.wtf.

As of 2023-May-01, Bluesky invite codes were reportedly selling for $300USD on eBay.
