The unreasonable advantage of building local-first
Planted
Tended
- Conference Talk by Jack McCloy about the biz opporunities of LoFi
- Given at the Local-First Conference (2024)
Notes
- This talk feels a lot like how we pitched this at Fission Codes for 5+ years
- This did not pan out
- Argument
- Better UX
- Analogy to how cars were bad for the first 20+ years
- Performance, collaboration, power-user workflows
- Must be built-in, not bolted on
- Easier to build
- ...but not today
- Need a "Rails for LoFi"
- Better UX
- My continuing question: what is the biz model that will drive companies towards LoFi? Is it still just SaaS? If so, LoFi's principles like interop and user agency seems pretty antithetical to building a classic SaaS moat.
